welcomes all to smoke and strut down South Center

Weimar locals flooded the streets near City Hall and the Boys and Girls Club to eat, dance, play, cook and enjoy Texas German hospitality for the city’s annual Gedenke! festival on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9.

BBQ Cook-Off Gedenke! welcomed 66 teams for its annual BBQ Cook-Off and handed out over $10,000 worth of cash and prizes for winners. Judging on Friday, May 8, covered margaritas, sausage, open and barbecue sauce, and Saturday, May 9, covered chicken, beans, pork rib, brisket, showmanship and overall winners. Parade Contest

Children raced for candy thrown from around 50 floats that chugged down West North Street to North Mechanic Street for the festival’s morning parade, Saturday, May 9. Floats were judged under the following categories:

Weimar Encore Lions Club hosted their annual Gedenke! Pie Contest on Saturday, May 9. Funds from the contest will support scholarships for Weimar High School graduates. Pies were judged under the following categories: Grand Prize: Nancy Parrish with her chocolate truffle pie

5K Fun Run

Runners blasted off for the annual 5K Fun Run hosted by the Rotary Club of Weimar at Weimar Soccer Fields early Saturday morning, May

9. The race had 96 registered participants of whom 85 finished.

The first male finisher was Johnathan Garcia, who placed first across all runners, with a time of

15 minutes and 52 seconds. The first female finisher was Amberlee Munsch, who placed eighth across all runners, with a time of 23 minutes and 10 seconds.

The first-place winners for each age group are: for ages 14 and under, Kase Bubela; for ages 15--

19, Peyton Brown; for ages 20-29, Jonathan Garcia; for ages 30-39, Mason Hubenak; for ages 40-49, Chris Brown; for ages 50-59, Joey Cardenas; for ages 60-69, David Smock; and for ages 70 and above, Mark Cooke.
