Over 50 county locals communed on the Colorado County Courthouse lawn to sing worship songs and prayer in fellowship to celebrate the 75th National Day of Pray, Thursday, May 7.
Organized by Dr. Mazie Leftwich, the president of the Columbus Ministerial Alliance, the service featured messages from seven local religious leaders, music from the Columbus Christian Women Chorus and by Tracy Baker and the St. Paul Trio of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a presentation of colors from the local Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1127.
“In a time when many are seeking peace, direction and connection, this gathering offers an opportunity to stand united in prayer for our families, schools, churches, businesses and local, state and national leaders,” Leftwich wrote in her community invitation.
The Christian leaders each spoke on and prayed for a topic of daily life. Deacon Andy Nunmaker of St. Roch Catholic Church prayed for family. Pastor Joel Usher of Glidden Baptist Church prayed for the church. Pastor Jose Reynosa of Iglesia Principe de Paz prayed for business and the workplace. Pastor Margarita Arroyo of Christ Episcopal Eagle Lake prayed for education. Pastor Alan Kethan of St. Paul Lutheran Church prayed for military and law enforcement. Pastor Victor Morrison of First Baptist Church prayed for government. Pastor John Jones of Three Crosses Ministry prayed for arts, media and entertainment.
“Organizers emphasize that this is not only a moment of reflection, but also a chance to strengthen the bonds of community,” Leftwich wrote. “By gathering together in prayer, participants help foster a spirit of compassion, unity and shared purpose throughout Columbus and beyond.”
National Day of Pray officially started in 1952 after former President Harry Truman signed a joint Congressional resolution into law. However, the tradition dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in establishing a new nation.
