Around 50 community members showed up in support as Eagle Lake City Council swore in its new mayor, two new council members and two incumbent council members during its meeting, Tuesday, May 12. A few hours earlier, Weimar swore in a new council member, its incumbent mayor and an incumbent council member.

After presenting a certification of appreciation for outgoing councilmember Randy Turney, former Eagle Lake Mayor Tim Kelley accepted his own certification. Moments later, Kelley swore in Anthony Johnson as the city’s new mayor, the first Black male mayor in its history. Around 50 Black community members filled seats and lined the walls and foyer of the small council chambers. Johnson eagerly welcomed them and encouraged future attendance.

“Let’s fill this room like this every meeting,” Johnson said. “This is what is going to bring attention to Eagle Lake. This is what is going to help us bring change, so we need this insight.”

As his first act as mayor, Johnson swore in Ann Jones then Michael Cooper as the two newest council members. Jones and Cooper ran unopposed in the May 2 election. Amy Maxwell and Abel “Billy” Sosa then swore their oaths of office as incumbent members, edging out Turner in the election. The council voted Maxwell to serve as mayor pro tempore again.

Place 1 Councilwoman Becky Roberts swore in incumbent Mayor Carlton Tucker who ran unopposed on the ballot. Tucker subsequently swore in Place 2 Councilman Kyle Christen as a sitting member and then Place 4 Councilman Clayton Langhoff as a new member.

The council also welcomed police officer Marcos Zepeda to Weimar Police Department. The force now staffs Chief Jason Smalley, Lieutenant Christopher Rosales and four officers: Jimmy Schneider, Pete Calvert, Miguel Camero and Zepeda.
