Columbus Garden Club has been giving scholarships since the 2001-2002 year. All graduating seniors in Columbus are eligible to apply. Funds for the scholarships are earned via the annual garden club scholarship quilt, a silent auction and the scholarship garden cart drawing during the annual Garden Club plant sale.

This year’s recipients are Will Chavez, Jr. and Cooper Osborne.

Will Chavez has distinguished himself through his dedication, perseverance and commitment to both his school and community. A graduate of Columbus High School, he plans to attend The University of Texas at San Antonio to study Environmental Science and pursue a career as an environmental scientist.

Throughout high school, Will was actively involved in AVID, UIL Social Studies, Soccer, Science Club, Leo Club and Floral Design, where he earned his floral certification. He also participated in football, swimming and yearbook photography. In addition to his extracurricular activities, Will balanced school with employment and volunteer service in the community.

Teachers and mentors describe Will as hardworking, thoughtful and dependable, noting the tremendous growth and maturity he has demonstrated over the years. His determination, leadership by example and willingness to help others make him a deserving recipient of the Columbus Garden Club Scholarship.

Cooper Osborne has excelled academically, athletically and in leadership throughout his high school career. Ranked eighth in his class with a 4.1 GPA, he plans to attend Texas Tech University to study agribusiness with the goal of building a future in agriculture through his own cattle operation and business ventures.

A dedicated student-athlete, Cooper was a member of the state championship football team during his junior year and the co-district championship team during his senior year. He earned First Team honors both his junior and senior seasons and qualified twice for the state powerlifting meet. Cooper also maintained AB Honor Roll status for all four years of high school and was recognized as Student of the Six Weeks during both his junior and senior years.

Beyond academics and athletics, Cooper has been active in agricultural and community activities, volunteering his time to assist with floral arrangements and school events while also working at a local tree farm. Teachers and mentors describe him as dependable, hardworking, and a positive leader among his peers. His strong work ethic, determination and commitment to excellence make him a deserving recipient of the Columbus Garden Club Scholarship.

Columbus Garden Club is proud to offer these scholarships, to support our students and schools and to always encourage our community to be a More Beautiful Community through its many gardens throughout the community and its Yard of the Month recognition and Community Beautification Award.
