Locals create free summer program for Eagle Lake youth

Eagle Lake residents Paula Richardson and her son, Jeremiah Paige, are launching Camp Good Ground, a free three-day summer program designed to provide faith-based activities and outdoor learning opportunities for local youth.

The camp, hosted by Resilient Path Navigations, will be held July 24-26 at Veterans Park and Seaholm Park and is open to children ages 2-17.

Richardson said community response to the initiative has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The buzz is hitting the town, and I thought I was excited but the people are excited! All I’m hearing is ‘It’s about time we had something positive for the kids to do’ and amen to that because I remember as a kid in Eagle Lake we had stuff to do. We had parades, festivals…the Prairie Chicken Festival was one of the highlights of my life as a kid. We want to help bring some of that energy back and give these kids something to do here in Eagle Lake. They need positive outlets.”

Camp Good Ground is built around the theme “Small Steps. Deep Roots.” Organizers say the nature-based program will help children grow in faith through movement, exploration, creativity and reflection.

Activities will include the Encouragement Relay Race, Perspective Clue Hunt, Courage to Ask Rope Maze and Move As One Plank Walk with Officer Joseph.

Snacks and refreshments will be served daily by the Campfire Crew. There will be a Camp Medic team onsite led by Alethea Chapman, RN.

Campers will also receive snacks from the fruit stand to sustain their energy and natural hydration, and sweet treats from the S’Mores Stand.

Camp swag bags will be given to each camper, and hydration stations will be available throughout the campsite.

Camp hours are 9 a.m. to noon Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 and 3-6 p.m. Sunday, July 26.

Paper registration forms are available at J&K Corner Store, Maxwell’s Meat Market, Dollar General, Eagle Lake City Hall, Eagle Lake Drugstore and Brookshire Brothers. Online registration is also available.

Registration ends June 19. Richardson said volunteers and donations-both monetary and supplies- are still needed. All volunteers will be subject to background checks.Donations can be made through PayPal, Venmo (campgoodground) or by check.

“As a community, I know we got this,” Richardson said. “Thank you for all of the support, let’s keep on finding positive things for our children to do that will help them build confidence, courage, and self esteem in our children so they can avoid potentially dangerous or negative things in the future.”
