Connor legacy continues through youth leadership camp

Three Colorado County youth will attend the Robert E. Connor Jr. Masonic Youth Camp this summer, continuing a legacy of leadership and service that has impacted the community for generations.

Among the campers is 9-year-old Jett Blaze Powell, whose great-uncle, the late Robert E. Connor Jr., is the camp’s namesake. Connor served as Past Grand Master of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Texas and was also the longtime police chief for the City of Columbus.

Through the support of Jantavia Connor Powell and the Connor family, two additional young men from Colorado County will also have the opportunity to attend the camp with Jett.

Held July 9-12 at Cathedral Oaks Retreat Center south of Weimar, the camp provides young men ages 9-17 with opportunities to develop leadership skills, build confidence, receive mentorship and form lasting friendships.

For Jantavia Powel l, helping local youth attend the camp is about more than honoring a family name.

“Having Jett attend a camp named for his great uncle is special. But being able to help other young men attend too makes it even more meaningful,” Powell said. “Legacy is about more than a name. It’s about creating opportunities for others.”
