Sold-out celebration highlights LGBTQ+ community

COLUMBUS — Community members and visitors from across the region gathered at Hound Song Brewing Co., Saturday, June 20, for Columbus, TX PRIDE’s sold-out drag show celebrating Pride Month.

The event fi l led all 124 available seats and left standing- room-only space in the brewery’s back room. Organizers said the evening served as both a fundraiser and an opportunity to bring together members and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community.

“(The event’s purpose was) to create community, provide fun and entertainment, and bring supporters of the LGBTQ+ community together because there’s always strength in numbers,” Columbus, TX PRIDE President Jeffrey Reich-Hale said.

At tendees from Aust in, Houston and other communities flocked to the event.

Austin resident Carlo Cultura said the evening marked his first drag-show experience.

“My favorite part was the crowd interaction and performer confidence,” Cultura said. “It was a refreshing change from just drinking at a normal bar. It was entertaining, unique and memorable.”

The 18-and-older show featured performances by Ms. Gay America 2024 Dessie Love Blake, along with Keymiyah Dupree, Rachel B-Face and Jessika Del Ray. Music was provided by DJ Stephen Jusko of Houston’s Montrose Country Club.

Board member Toni Conner said the atmosphere during the evening remained energetic and welcoming.

“I loved how much excitement was in the room,” Conner said. “I had no voice the next day from singing along.”

A small group of protesters gathered outside the venue during the event. According to organizers, the individuals remained peaceful and left shortly afterward.

Columbus, TX PRIDE organizers said they were encouraged by the turnout and support shown during the celebration.
