Two Columbus swimmers qualify for national competition

Two members of the Columbus Aquatic Team (CATfish) have qualified to compete at the State Games of America, an Olympic-style national competition scheduled for July 28-Aug. 2 in Pennsylvania.

Held every two years, the State Games of America brings together gold, silver and bronze medalists from state games across the country to compete for national honors.

Savannah DeMers earned a spot in the national meet and will compete in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly and a relay.

“I’m excited to go to nationals in Pennsylvania and compete against other states,” DeMers said.

Joining her will be teammate Olive Vasquez, who qualified in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly and a relay.

“I am proud to be swimming for Columbus at the national level,” Vasquez said.

The two swimmers have spent countless hours training to earn their place on the national stage and will continue preparing before traveling to Pennsylvania later this month to compete against some of the nation’s top swimmers.
