WEIMAR — The Weimar Vets dropped their home opener at Strickland Field on June 14, falling 15-4 to the New Ulm Firemen.
New Ulm broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring seven twoout runs to pull away for the victory.
Ryan Rerich led the Vets offensively with two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Kannyn Goehring reached base four times with two hits and two walks while scoring a run. Weston “Mo” Pavlik added a single, a double and scored once.
Joe Frank and Seth Janecka each drove in a run, while Carter Helmcamp collected a hit and scored. Camden Morrison also recorded a hit, and Dylan Stech reached base on a walk.
Defensively, Morrison, Frank, Phillip Patek, Rerich and Pavlik turned in strong performances, highlighted by a standout play at first base by Pavlik. Ty Chmelik pitched for the Vets.
The Vets thanked their fans for their continued support, along with Jakob Rehak for operating the scoreboard and serving as the public address announcer. The team also recognized the Weimar High School maintenance crew for preparing the field.
The Vets return to Strickland Field at 3 p.m. Sunday to host Serbin.
