The Columbus Minor All-Star softball team defeated the Sealy Minor All-Star softball team for the district championship last Tuesday, June 23.

Both teams played a great game, but it was Columbus’ pitching that once again led them to a 7-3 victory for the district championship.

Emri Chester was in the circle for Columbus, and she threw another no-hitter in the championship game. Sealy scored their three runs from walks and errors while Chester struck out 11 of the batters she faced.

Columbus’ pitching has been the highlight of their participation in the district tournament. They gave up only seven runs and recorded three no-hitters.

The game was scoreless in the first inning, but Columbus’ offense opened the scoring as they scored twice in the top of the second inning. Sealy cut Columbus’ 2-0 lead in half, scoring one run in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth inning both teams scored two runs, each bringing the score to 4-3. Leading one run, Columbus’ defense came to life and prevented Sealy from scoring any more runs for the rest of the game.

In the top of the fifth inning, Columbus scored one run then followed that up by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth. This brought the game to its final score of 7-3, which awarded Columbus the district championship.

While Chester was outstanding in the circle, she also had a great offensive game. She led the team with the only double hit in the game.

Callen Barten also had a big offensive game for Columbus as she recorded two hits and three RBIs, which led Columbus in this game. While Chester and Barten had big games, almost every player in the batting lineup for Columbus recorded a hit in the championship game.

This performance by Columbus’ offense showed that Columbus did not solely rely on their pitching.

Each player had a role on this team. While it may not have shown in the box score every game, each of these players played their role perfectly and helped Columbus capture the district championship.

Columbus will now begin preparing for the state tournament, which will begin on July 10 at 8 p.m. where they will take on the winners of section three.
