Columbus Ballparks Renovation, Inc., with the Football Complex Project, hosted a one-day Schobel Football Camp at Cardinal Memorial Stadium. Camp instructors were Aaron, Matt and Bo Schobel along with some of their former college teammates.

Brandy Rossignol, 14, of Columbus, won the Miss Texas Junior Teen pageant at the state National American Miss Pageant. She received her official state crown, banner, trophy and a prize of $1,000 cash.

50 YEARS AGO

July 1, 1976

The July 1, 1976 edition of The Colorado County Citizen observed the 200th Bicentennial of America.

A detailed study of business activity in Colorado County and other communities across the country showed that the local economy moved into higher gear in the past year. In Colorado County, it showed the largest part of the consumer dollar went for food.

Columbus, having celebrated the nation’s 200th year in May, joined the rest of the nation in a tolling of the bells in recognition of the Bicentennial. J.D. Seymour, Chamber President, said the fire whistle would blow several times at noon Sunday, and a number of churches would ring their bells in a salute to the nation.

150 YEARS AGO

July 6, 1876

As America turned 100 years old, The Colorado Citizen advertised dry goods, spectacles, cigars, tobacco, pipes, lumber and tinware. Ben Baker was the publisher and a subscription to The Citizen was two dollars a year – in advance.

The newspaper was four pages long and still some years away from having photos published.
