Commissioners shouldn't approve upcoming tax break

On July 13, the Colorado County Commissioners Court will hold a public hearing at which representatives from the solar energy company will present information and request tax abatements for the solar farm project in southern Colorado County. After hearing the presentation, the Commissioners Court will decide how to move forward with the request.

I encourage everyone to attend and learn about the process and how it will work since this decision will set a precedent.

These energy companies do not need tax abatements. These projects do not bring long-term jobs to Colorado County to justify this kind of tax break. Our roads and infrastructure remain in a constant state of disrepair, and we are repeatedly told there is not enough money to improve them.

Giving multimillion-dollar energy companies a tax break while shifting more of the tax burden onto local taxpayers is wrong.

Please contact your county commissioner and let them know how you feel before the hearing. While some may try to place responsibility on the property owners who leased or sold their land, the decision on whether to grant tax abatements ultimately rests with the Commissioners Court. Our commissioners are elected to represent the taxpayers of Colorado County — not large energy companies.
