Former Columbus fire chief dies

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of former Fire Chief Bob Walla, who dedicated more than four decades of service to the department and the Columbus community.

Walla joined the department in 1965 and served as fire chief from 1980 until his retirement in 2011.

In a social media post announcing his passing, the department credited Walla’s leadership and commitment with helping shape the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department into what it is today.

“His impact reaches far beyond the years he served, living on through the traditions, values and firefighters who continue to answer the call,” the department wrote.

The depa r tment expressed its gratitude for Walla’s lifetime of service and extended condolences to his family, friends, and the firefighters who served alongside him.
