Operation Backpack success

EAGLE LAKE — More than 300 backpacks were distributed Saturday, July 18, during Operation Backpack at the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce, helping local families prepare for the upcoming school year.

Now in its third year, the annual giveaway was started by Rice Consolidated Independent School District board member Joe Romo.

“Backpacks are expensive, and I can remember being the youngest in my family and getting the hand-medowns,” Romo said. “Anyone who knows me knows I love giving back, especially to children. I look forward to doing this every year.”

The backpacks were donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. Families also enjoyed free hot dogs, chips, face painting, music and a bounce house during the event.
