The Rice Lady Raiders hosted several schools in scrimmage matches on Friday, Aug. 7.
The scrimmages were 30 minutes long with a running clock and allowed the coaching staff of the teams to evaluate their team in a game setting.
The Lady Raiders have worked hard during the summer to prepare for this season, and Head Coach Morgan Hunter said she likes what she sees from her team.
“So far, I like that we are continuing to compete and maintain our composure no matter what is happening on the court, which is something that we have talked about,” Hunter said. “The girls are also being really supportive of their teammates so those are some positives.”
Hunter said there are still a few things to figure out with their lineup, and the scrimmages are a great time to work players out in different positions to see who fits best in those spots.
“The girls are doing a really good job of processing what they need to do and where they need to be on the court,” Hunter said.
With players performing in different positions, mistakes are expected, but Hunter said that is all a part of the growing process.
“We have been talking about responding from an error and that’s a big thing in volleyball. Just take things one point at a time and when something happens, process it and three seconds later move on and make sure you are ready to go for the next point,” Hunter said. “We have been talking about responding from an error and that’s a big thing in volleyball. The Lady Raiders will open their season on their home court against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Aug. 11, then they will travel to Van Vleck to compete in the Van Vleck Tournament on Thursday, Aug. 13 through Saturday, Aug. 15.
