Football season is back this week, and the Rice Consolidated Raiders were back on the field putting in work for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
The Raiders took things slow in the first couple of days of practice, going over some fundamentals.
Next, they broke off into group dril ls with the wide receivers doing some catching and speed drills. The defensive backs practiced some foot work drills, and the offensive and defensive lines were able to push each other around a bit.
As for the quarterbacks, it was not anything too labor intensive - some light throwing to get their arms loosened up. Running backs completed some foot work and jump cut drills to ensure they are hitting the right gaps.
When it came time for the team section of practice, the Raiders kept a consistent pace, making sure everyone understood their assignments on any given play. Offensive and defensive lines drilled coming off the ball and getting on their blocks quickly. There were also checks to see if the linebackers were making the right reads defensively.
Quarterbacks, receivers and running backs were working on getting the play call right in the huddle, then executing in a game-like situation.
Working within the new UIL Heat guidelines was a priority for the Raiders. Raiders Head Coach Brad Dumont held an afternoon practice, and he made sure his guys stayed hydrated with multiple water breaks between drills.
As school starts and practices continue, Rice looks ahead to the start of their season on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7:30 p.m. where they will host Houston Wheatley at Rice Veterans’ Memorial Stadium.
