The Columbus Cardinals were back on the gridiron this week preparing for the upcoming 2026 season.
The Cardinals were picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football to win the state championship this year and have begun preparing to live up to the hype.
The Cards have been taking the field early in the mornings to beat the Texas heat while following new UIL guidelines and ensuring players have plenty of access to water.
While it is only the first week of practice, the Cardinals have slowly but surely begun ramping up the pace. On Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Cards held a high-tempo practice filled with energy from the players. The Cardinals were allowed to introduce some contact, but Head Coach Matt Schobel emphasized keeping it controlled. With the season still weeks away, Schobel’s focus is on keeping his players healthy while preparing them for full-contact practices.
Despite not going full contact, the Cards got plenty of work on both sides of the ball. Early practices give players an opportunity to learn their assignments and work out mistakes before the season begins.
Toward the end of practice, the offense and defense went head-tohead while working on run-pass option plays. Players on both sides brought plenty of energy to the field as the Cardinals continued preparing for their season opener.
Columbus will open the season Friday, Aug. 28, on the road against Bay City at 7 p.m.
