The Columbus Lady Cardinals are off to a hot start in 2026, winning six of their first seven matches to open the season.
Columbus began the year on the road against El Campo Tuesday, Aug. 11, sweeping the Ricebirds in three sets.
The Lady Cards returned home for six matches in the Kecia Davis Memorial Tournament Thursday, Aug. 13, and Friday, Aug. 14, at Columbus High School. Tournament matches were played in a best-ofthree format rather than the traditional best-offive.
Columbus opened tournament play against Edna. After dropping the first set, the Lady Cards responded with back-toback set victories to take the match.
They followed with a straight-set victory over Lexington before Burton handed Columbus its first loss of the season.
After dropping the opening set to Burton 2520, Columbus responded with a 25-16 victory in the second. The deciding set remained close before Burton edged the Lady Cards 25-23 to take the match.
Columbus quickly bounced back, defeating East Bernard and Round Top-Carmine in straight sets.
The Lady Cards closed tournament play against Schulenburg. Columbus won the opening set before Schulenburg answered by taking the second to force a deciding third set.
Columbus took control in the finale, holding Schulenburg to 15 points to secure its sixth victory of the young season.
The Lady Cards will return to action Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Schulenburg Varsity Tournament.
