50 YEARS AGO

Thursday, Aug. 19, 1976

Summer vacation was over for 1,220 Columbus area students when school started Aug. 20.

The Citizen published an aerial view of the Lower Colorado River Authority Fayette power plant 17 miles northwest of Columbus. The $400 million facility covers 6,400 acres and includes a 4,000 acre lake. It was expected to be online Jan.1, 1978.

The First State Bank elected Allan A. Hill as chairman of the board and CEO. Gus H. Miller, Jr. was elected president. They succeeded the late E. G. Miller as chairman and president.

Patti Stallman won the District 11 Farm Bureau queen contest in Richmond. Patti is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stallman and will represent the district in the state Farm Bureau contest in Ft. Worth in December.

75 YEARS AGO

Aug. 23, 1951

Columbus negro high school students will move into the brand new high school and gym building Sept. 10 The new school was published on the front page of the Citizen.

The school board was expected to make a decision Friday on the dispute about detaching land from Garwood District.

Signage instructing drivers to the shortest route to Houston, New Orleans and the East Coast was erected in the Columbus area.

Local boys were given a free week’s trip to Salvation Army camp.
