Rice, Columbus get statequalifying performances at regional track meet

SEGUIN – The track teams for both Rice and Columbus needed a second trip to Matador Stadium after qualifying for Regionals after strong outings in the area meet. Each team added more quality performances to this season’s resume as both teams finished with a single athlete that will move on to the state meet. While many did not reach the next level, there were many performances to be satisfied with as the Raiders and the Cardinals had strong outings in the regional meet.

After a few near misses at the area meet, the Raiders had just two athletes move on to compete in the regional meet. Robert Myers will move on to the state meet after picking up another medal in the shot put toss. After claiming the silver medal at Area, Myers repeated with another silver medal at Regionals to advance to the state meet. Kejun Wilson reached the regional meet after taking fourth place in the 800m run the prior week. Wilson finished in the top half of his fellow regional qualifiers during his most recent outing. The senior finished in seventh place in his event after finishing just three seconds behind the bronze-medal finisher, hinting at the tightness of the competition.

Columbus had just one boy qualify for Regionals with a handful of Lady Cards also competing at the regional level. Ty’Vone Whitehead was the lone representative for the Cards as he qualified for the regional meet in both the 100m and 200m sprints. His best event, the 100, proved to be where Whitehead had his best performance. After taking third place in the prelims, he took first place in the finals to claim the Regional Championship for the event. He did not qualify for the finals in the 200m dash with a tenthplace finish.
