Columbus VFD conducts nighttime water rescue

Columbus Volunteer Fire Department conducted a water rescue after dark for two kayakers stranded near Tait Ranch, Thursday, Aug. 20.

After being dispatched at 8:37 p.m., Columbus VFD initiated a search with ATVs for the kayakers stranded along the Colorado River in an area with limited cell service.

Columbus VFD was able to pinpoint the kayakers location at 9:13 p.m. after the kayakers managed to establish contact with 911 dispatchers via text message. Shortly after, crews launched a rescue boat from the Altair rive bridge boat ramp to head upstream.

The kayakers were successfully located around 9:50 p.m. and transported safely with their kayaks back to the Altair bridge.

Columbus VFD thanked Colorado County Sheriff’s Office for drone assistance, the property owners of Tait Ranch for access, Texas Game Wardens for assistance in responding and dispatchers for maintaining communication.
