The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department announced the loss of one current and two retired service members during the month of August. The department wi l l have their flags at halfstaff until further notice .
Jerome Chudej
Jerome George Chudej Jr., 78, passed away peacefully on Aug. 2. He joined the New Ulm VFD in 1976 and served for 50 years including as fire chief and in various other officer positions. Chudej was well-known for preparing the famous BBQ sauce for the New Ulm’s Fi remen’s Feast in September. A funeral mass was held on Aug. 10. In l ieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Ulm VFD.
Ben Darold Marek
Ben Darold “Bootsie” Marek, 96, passed away peacefully on Aug. 22. He served in various officer and committee roles with the New Ulm VFD. A funeral service was held on Aug. 27. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John Luteran Church in New Ulm or the New Ulm VFD.
Douglas Luedke
Douglas Alan Luedke, 67, passed away peacefu l ly on Aug. 24. He joined the New Ulm VFD in 1991 and served as fire chief, assistant fire chief, second vice president and, at his time of death, v ice president. A funeral service was held on Sept. 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Ulm VFD, Industry VFD, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Industry, or the American Heart Association.
