Local author explores new advice column

Colorado County author Lois Robinson is considering bringing her advice on aging well from the pages of her first book to the pages of the Colorado County Citizen.

Robinson, 81, recently presented her book, How Not to Grow Old, to the Columbus Lions Club and Friends of the Nesbitt Memorial Library. The firsttime author draws on stories and humor from her childhood and a 50-year career in the business world to encourage readers not to allow age to define how they live.

Robinson spent five decades managing large shopping centers, including the Galleria in Houston.

“The book is a blueprint to help get the most out of the last 10 to 15 years of your life,” Robinson said.

After receiving questions from readers, Robinson began considering a regular advice column addressing some of the challenges — and opportunities — that come with getting older.

One reader, “Jane from Eagle Lake,” asked how she could meet new people after many of her longtime friends had died or moved into retirement communities.

“Get to the nearest gym, darling,” Robinson responded — quickly clarifying that she meant a wellness gym rather than the weightlifting variety.

She suggested looking for gentle yoga, Zumba or exercise groups at local senior centers or libraries and, more importantly, taking the initiative to introduce yourself to others.

“At your age, you cannot wait around for someone else to take the lead,” Robinson said.

Another reader, “Sandra from Weimar,” asked how to keep a wardrobe from becoming dated. Robinson suggested starting with a simple trip through the back of the closet.

“You might find some gems you haven’t seen in months, and those hidden treasures might just turn into a new outfit for you,” Robinson said. “Men, too. I’ll bet there are some very flattering shirts in that old closet.”

The potential column would give readers an opportunity to submit their own questions about aging, lifestyle, relationships, and navigating the later chapters of life.
