St. John's Episcopal Church, 915 Travis
The church was founded in 1856 by Rev. Hannibal Pratt and ranks 8 in the Diocese of Texas in point of age and continuous existence. Dr. Steven Tomlinson has presided over the congregation
since September 2023. The church yard will stop almost everyone in their tracks as they pass by and see the beautiful sitting/meditation area under an expansive oak tree. In the gardens you will find purple heart, Rose of Sharon and multiple ferns. Bugleweed surrounds the massive oak base along with leopard plant and lily turf. In the beds that are lining the side of the sanctuary you see juniper, Mealy Cup Sedge, Anacua, spider plants, Longstalk Sedge and vincas. Along the pathways in the sitting area are shell ginger and Longstalk Sedge. Near the historical marker lies a garden with lantana and Slender Goldshower. Facing Preston Street are elephant ears and crepe myrtles.
