While 2026 is the year of America being 250, Sept. 17 is the 239th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. In 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) petitioned the U.S. Congress to designate Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. Constitution Week has three primary goals: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.
To commemorate the observance locally, members of the John Everett Chapter of the DAR distributed Constitution packets to all eighthgrade students in Columbus. Each packet included a pocket Constitution, a small flag, a Preamble bookmark, a pencil, an activity pad, a friendship bracelet and a flag pin. The chapter also donated books on American history and civics.
Lucas Friedrich, a social studies teacher, accepted the packets and books for Columbus Junior High School. At St. Anthony Catholic School, eighthgrade social studies teacher Kaysey Christoph received the packets for her students, while library assistant Haley Fuentes accepted the books for the school library.
