COLUMBUS — Dozens of players lunged, leaped, batted and swung at neon green pickleballs in support of Colorado County Habitat for Humanity during the nonprofit’s first “Pickleball Palooza: Play for a Purpose” this year, Saturday, Sept. 19, at Columbus Athletic Barn.
Local and visitors from Sealy, Houston and farther played and donated in support of Habitat for Humanity’s critical home repairs and new homeownership programs. Executive Director Charmaine Katz said the palooza was a great success and intends to bring it back in the future.
“Not only is it successful in a sense that it’s bringing in new people and new energy, it’s also fun. It’s indoors,” Katz said.
The event for all ages featured a pickleball tournament, golf simulator, a silent auction, raffles, food vendors, and community conversation. Wade and Reid Wheatley won the tournament consisting of 24 teams of two. Players suggested adding a tournament bracket for young players next year.
