Hands-on program to cover benefits of prescribed fire, regulations, wildfire mitigation practices
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the South Central Texas Prescribed Burn Association will host a Texas Prescribed Fire Field Day for Fayette County on Oct. 1 in La Grange.
The free, hands-on program will take place at the AgriLife Extension office for Fayette County, 255 Svoboda Lane. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
The event is open to landowners, Prescribed Burn Association members, agency staff and community members interested in learning more about the benefits of prescribed fire, burn laws and regulations, wildfire preparedness, and more.
Participants are asked to register online at tx.ag/ PrescribedFire.
The program offers three continuing fi re training credits and two cont inuing educat ion units — one general and one integrated pest management — from the Texas Department of Agriculture.
The event will provide participants with practical instruction on Firewise practices to protect homes and property from wildfires and discuss the safe implementation of prescribed fire to meet land management goals.
Topics covered include: Why burn? Benefits for wildlife, vegetation and wildfire risk reduction.
Is fire right for your property? Where prescribed burning fits into land management.
Picking the right day: Weather and conditions for a safe, effective burn.
You don’t have to do it alone: How Prescribed Burn Associations help landowners.
Protecting what matters: Firewise practices around homes and structures.
Burning responsibly: Texas laws, planning and what happens when things don’t go as planned.
Pending weather conditions, a brush-pile burn demonstration will also take place.
