The Colorado County Citizen will retract the recently published article regarding the Columbus City Council and former Fire Marshal. This decision comes after determining the story did not meet our standards for accuracy, completeness and fair reporting.
After reviewing the article, we determined that significant information and context regarding the matter were either inaccurately presented or inadequately reported. Because those issues could not be appropriately addressed through a simple correction, we made the decision to retract the story in its entirety.
We take seriously our responsibility to accurately report the actions of local government and to provide readers with the context necessary to understand those actions.
Our staff is reviewing the meeting, verifying the information and re-reporting the story. A substantially revised article will be published online as soon as that work is complete, and will appear in next week's print edition.
We apologize to our readers and to those affected by our deficiencies in the original report. When our journalism falls short of the standards our community should expect from us, we believe the appropriate response is to acknowledge it, correct it and do the work necessary to get the story right.
