Lady Cards improve to 6-0 in district and reach a milestone

The Columbus Lady Cardinals picked up their sixth win in district play after defeating the Rice Lady Raiders on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Columbus High School.

In addition to winning their sixth game in district play, Lady Cards head coach Kayley Johns achieved a milestone by recording her 400th win as a coach.

Johns won her 400th match as a coach at Columbus High School said she is thankful for her coaching staff and the girls for helping her achieve that milestone.

In the match against Rice, the Lady Cards jumped out to an early lead in the first set and held out to it. They closed the set out with a 25-14 win over the Lady Raiders to take a 1-0 set lead early in the match.

In the second set, the Lady Cards defense played a strong game and held the Lady Raiders to only four points. The Lady Cards picked up the win in the second set with a score of 25-4.

Then in the third, the Lady Cards defense again held the Lady Raiders to single digit points to close out the match. The Lady Cards ended the match with a 25-3 win over the Lady Raiders to improve to 6-0 in district play.

The Lady Cards were led by Harper Gerik, Demi Roecker and Logan Glueck who recorded seven kills each in the win over the Lady Raiders. Sloan Youens was second on the team with six kills in the win over the Lady Raiders.

Lucy Schobel had a huge game for the Lady Cards as she recorded 25 assists during Thursday night’s win. Schobel also led the team with six aces followed by Mary Fitzgerald, who recorded five aces.

Roecker led the Lady Cards with six digs, and Candee Pitchford recorded five digs.

The Lady Cards will be back un action on Friday, Oct. 2, when they go on the road to face Hallettsville at Hallettsville High School.
