Community invited to new trail dedication

The Friends of Zimmerscheidt Historic School will host a National Night Out celebration and dedication of the commemorative bricks and new walking trail from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The event will be held at the Zimmerscheidt Historic School, 2184 FM 109, approximately 3.5 miles south of Frelsburg. Tim and Alicia Kulhanek will provide music during the family-friendly event.

Commemorative bricks remain available for purchase by calling 979-7327214 or emailing zimmerscheidt@ gmail.com.

The historic site includes a one-room schoolhouse and an auxiliary building that once served as a training site for World War II veterans returning to civilian life. Training included welding, engine repair, and farm equipment operation and repair to help veterans re-enter the workforce.

Layne Grafe earned his Eagle Rank on Sept. 22, 2026, a member of the Industry Scouts Troop 299. He is senior at Bellville High School and completed his Eagle Scout project for the Friends of Zimmerscheidt Historic School at their historic site located in the community of Zimmerscheidt between Columbus and Frelsburg on FM 109. Layne built two rock landscape beds and laid commemorative bricks at the entrance of the pavilion.

Thank you to the those who donated supplies for the project: decomposed granite was donated by Scott Kleimann at River Bend Rock Landscape Supplies in Columbus, sand was donated by Dale Rinn of Industry, and other materials were donated by Andrew, Clyde & Virginia Heinsohn of Frelsburg. Layne is the son of Melanie Heinsohn-Grafe and the late Darrell Grafe. Layne has two brothers, Lucas and Landon, who also earned their Eagle Rank in 2025 and 2021.
