Education, exercise and excitement started the year at St. Anthony Catholic School (SAS). Our year began with lots of smiles and hugs after an enjoyable summer break as families gathered for our Open House to kick off the new school year. Father James welcomed students back to school with a blessing of the backpacks.
Athletics started right away, and our cross-country runners continue to endure the heat during meets and practices. They started their season in Yoakum, where many of our athletes recorded personal- best times. Carley Aaron placed ninth in the junior high girls division. In Bastrop, Aaron placed fifth in the seventh-grade girls division. In September, while competing in Navasota, Aaron placed seventh out of 87 girls, and Carson McRee placed 15th out of 67 boys.
Our girls continue to show their strength with the start of volleyball season. Their season has already included tournaments at St. Michael and St. Rose of Lima. Their recent matches against Weimar Junior High resulted in wins for both the A and B teams.
Although our football games aren’t happening on Sundays, our students are eager to cheer on our teams. This year, students had the choice of tackle or co-ed flag football. The co-ed team has started its season and is looking forward to its next game against Trinity Episcopal School. Our tackle football team started the season with a win against Trinity Episcopal School on our home field.
Our cheerleaders helped get the school spirit going during our first pep rally of the year and continued to encourage our boys during their first game. Our school is looking forward to our Homecoming game Wednesday, Sept. 23.
Our cheerleaders also participated in the Colorado County Fair Parade, where their float won in the educational category. Sixteen SAS students participated in the fair this year, along with numerous student art submissions.
Our SAS community was blessed to see alumni from the Class of 2026 confirmed by Bishop Cahill at St. Anthony Catholic Church in August. Our current eighth-grade class also attended its eighthgrade retreat in August at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Victoria. The retreat provided students with an opportunity to reflect on their faith and the upcoming school year.
Upcoming events include the St. Anthony Catholic Church Picnic on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Columbus Hall. Also, mark your calendars for our annual Fall Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 24.
