COLUMBUS — A pedestrian was sent to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while she was crossing Highway 71 Business near Shipley’s Do-Nuts and Brookshire Brothers in Columbus early Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23.

According to Columbus Police Department Police Chief Chris Mayfield, witnesses reported a Nissan Infiniti turning left from Jackson Street next to Shipley’s Do-Nuts onto Highway 71 Business before striking the victim. Mayfield said the driver, Shinola Moore, 56 of Columbus, made a complete stop at the stop sign and was not speeding.

“The driver just couldn’t see her because of the A-pillar that was blocking it (her view),” Mayfield said. “She was waiting for traffic to cross; she had an opening; she went and crashed.”

The A-pillars of a car are the vertical corner supports that connect the front windshield and roof to the car’s main body.

Colorado County EMS and Columbus PD responded to the scene. Officers closed the left northbound lane of Highway 71 Business for less than an hour.

The victim, a 22-yearold female, was transported to a hospital via ambulance. Mayfield reported that she was stable, alert and breathing with a head injury.

Mayfield added that Moore did not conduct any traffic violations and will “not at this moment” face an investigation or charges for the incident.
