The historic Gegenworth House slowly traveled from its long-standing home next to the Townsend House and the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department station on Spring Street to its new location at 1321 Bowie Street behind the Nesbitt Memorial Library and Archives in Columbus, Wednesday, Oct. 7 After purchasing it, the Columbus Community Industrial Development Corporation granted ownership of the house to the Nesbitt Memorial Library Foundation. The house’s move will make way for the future expansion of the Columbus VFD station, according to city officials.
“We’re honored to help preserve this piece of Columbus history and give the Gegenworth House a meaningful new purpose,” the foundation posted on Facebook. “Once restored, the Gegenworth House will provide much-needed space to display pieces from our archives, host meet ings, offer programs, and bring our community together.”
The library will host a fundraising celebration of the house on Saturday, Oct. 17. Attendees will enjoy live music by The Songbird, Philip Brummett, catering from chef Brandon Schultz, a silent auction, tours of the house and artist renderings of the project’s completion. Tickets are $75 per person and available for purchase at secure.givelively.org/event/nesbitt-memorial-library-foundation-inc/restoration-and-celebration-of-the-gegenworth-house/.
