Arrest made in armed robbery of downtown EL business

Police say suspect displayed firearm, fled with cash box

A 17-year-old Eagle Lake resident was arrested Friday, Oct. 9, following an armed robbery at a downtown business in which police say the suspect displayed a firearm and fled with a cash box.

Malik LaShawn Toliver, 17, was charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, in connection with the incident at Moon Side Macaron, 102 W. Main St.

According to Eagle Lake Police Chief Donald Chaney, officers responded to the business at approximately 11:45 a.m. with assistance from the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Chaney said the suspect brandished a firearm during the robbery before fleeing with the cash box from the store, which contained a small amount of money.

No injuries were reported. The victim followed the suspect toward the area where he was eventually apprehended, Chaney said. The cash box was later recovered in the 100 block of West Union Street, several blocks from the business.

Because the suspect was believed to be armed, Colorado County sheriff’s deputies assisted Eagle Lake police in taking him into custody.

Toliver was arrested without incident at approximately 2:22 p.m. in the 100 block of West Union Street and booked into the Colorado County Jail.

Chaney said Toliver appeared before a magistrate, who set bond at $100,000.

Although an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active. Police are asking anyone who lives or works in the area and may have surveillance footage of the robbery or suspect to contact the Eagle Lake Police Department at 979-234-2727.
