Colorado County tallies record-breaking day one early voter turnout

COLUMBUS — Colorado County voters broke the record for numbers of ballots cast on the first day of early voting, for any election, by nearly 200 votes on Monday, Oct. 19, according to Colorado County Elections Administrator Rebecka LaCourse.

The previous record was set in the November 2020 presidential election with 727 ballots cast. La-Course said the polls on Monday had an average of about 76 voters an hour.

“Today, we officially broke that record for the first day of early voting, in a midterm election, with 917 ballots cast,” LaCourse said. “Keep the momentum going, Colorado County – there is plenty of time to cast your ballots!” Midterm elections generally see lower voter turnout than presidential elections, making this new record more notable. According to data from the United States Election Project, voter turnout for the last five presidential elections averaged at 61.42% in comparison to 41.52% for the last five midterm elections.

In-person early voting continues now through Friday, Oct. 30. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Visit coloradocountycitizen.com for more voting and election information.
