Local actors bring history to life with upcoming 23rd annual “Live Oaks and Dead Folks” Cemetery Tour

The dead tell no tales— except one night each year during the Live Oaks and Dead Folks Cemetery Tour. On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Nesbitt Memorial Library Foundation (NMLF) will host the 23rd annual Live Oaks and Dead Folks Cemetery Tour at the historic Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.

The actors are back! Costumed guides wi l l lead visitors by lantern light along the paths while talented actors—in full historical regalia— bring the departed to life through firsthand stories.

This year’s freshly researched lineup shines a light on powerhouses who rose from local soil to high office—including a Texas Attorney General, a Lieutenant Governor, and a Supreme Court Justice. The tour also honors beloved local figures within current memory of some of our long-time residents, such as Louise Dick, Sam Harbert, Myrah Jane Draper and the E.B. Mayes family.

“ History isn’t just tucked away in dusty books—it’s right beneath our feet,” said Tracey Wegenhoft, President of the Nesbitt Memorial Library Foundation. “Truth is really stranger, richer and far more entertaining than fiction.”

Tour-goers should arrive between 6:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. The tour will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and run for about 90 minutes. Tickets are $20 per person and available for purchase at the library or online.

Al l proceeds directly support the Nesbitt Memorial Library which includes children’s programs, archives and the ongoing restoration efforts for the historic Gegenworth House.
