Two area high school students selected as 2019 Government-in-Action Youth Tour Winners

Columbus High school student Evan Herchek and Faith Academy of Bellville student, Tanner David will be representing San Bernard Electric Coop and Texas in the 2019 Government-in-Action Youth Tour from June 12-21. They will first meet up in Austin, alongside 156 Texas participants, and learn about state government before heading to Washington, D.C. where they will join more than 1,500 students from across the country. During the trip they will visit the capital, museums, monuments and meet with elected officials from their area.

San Bernard EC practices the seven guiding principles of cooperatives, one of which is education. San Bernard EC is happy to provide education and training for their membership, particularly through youth programs such as the Government in Action Youth Tour. Through educating our youth they learn they can contribute effectively to their rural communities.

Since the Government-In-Action Youth Tour was started in 1965, San Bernard EC has sent over 80 students to Washington DC for this “trip of a lifetime” as described by many alumni. Students have returned with new friends, new appreciation of government, new leadership skills and a better idea of the world outside their hometown.

If you would like to be a part of next year’s Government-In-Action Youth Tour, watch for information on the 2020 contest this fall in your Texas Co-op Power Magazine, online, SBEC Face-book page or find us on Instagram under SBECYOUTHTOUR. The contest is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors whose parents or guardians are members of San Bernard EC.
