COLUMBUS--More than 100 people gathered Saturday night at the Mark IV Club in Columbus to honor its owner, Ivory Collins, as he celebrated 50 years working as a DJ.

Collins, a native of Columbus and graduate of Columbus High School, also attended Columbus’ Riverside High School, where he was a stand-out athlete, and attended Prairie View A&M University after high school.

A decorated former U.S. Marine who saw service in Vietnam during the U.S.’ last years of involvement in that conflict, Collins actually began DJ work in 1969.

When he started DJ work, Collins said the setup was simple, “it was two turntables and a mixer,” Collins said.

Collins’ did DJ work in the San Antonio and Houston areas, and said that the club scene in those areas used to be much different. He acquired the Mark IV in the 1980s, and entertained many live music acts there as well as DJs.

Today, he notes that most of DJ work is done on computers, but doesn’t stop Collins from still getting in the DJ booth.

Before Collins acquired the Mark IV, his brother owned another nearby club, Riverside Terrace.

For a number of years, Collins also owned a successful auto repair business in Columbus near Brookshire Brothers.

DJs came from far and wide to honor Collins’ half-century in the business. Guests at the club came from as far as Hallettsville, Pearland, Houston, Weimar, and Eagle Lake to honor collins. Peter’s Barbecue from Ellinger catered the event.
