COLUMBUS – The tradition of getting people together on the Colorado County courthouse square continues again this year with the launch of the Columbus Country Market on Saturday, March 30. The market, formerly the Columbus Farmer’s Market, will continue every month, on the last Saturday of the month. This new event is being put on by the same group of community members who’ve been running the Columbus Farmers’ Market for the last five years.

The organizing committee recently announced they’ve changed the name to the Columbus Country Market to better reflect their broad range of vendors. They also announced the new once-a-month format to attract more patrons and more vendors. They’re striving to create more of a “special event” on the square, once-a-month, every month. They’ve added food vendors, kids’ activities and more. The new Columbus Country Market hours will be 9 am to 1 pm.

As always, visitors can count on a wide array of farmers, gardeners, cooks, bakers, artists and craftspeople who will be there with fresh produce, plants, flowers, pickles, homemade jams & jellies, local honey, baked goods, yard eggs, jewelry, handmade hot pads and stuffed animals, crafts, handmade soaps and scents, yard art and more.

There’s always been some ready-to-eat foods available including Josie’s locally-made, delicious eggrolls. Now there will be even more food vendors as well as one or two food trucks, too. This month, visitors will find Po’ Boys, burgers and wings from Georgia Mae’s Good Eats and tacos, Italian ices and coffee from Jessica’s Express. Lots of other baked goods and pastries will be available, too.

Live music is planned each month, starting off in March with local celebrity, Victor Rodriguez. Talented deejay, singer and guitarist, Rodriguez has delighted crowds at Magnolia Days Festival, Columbus Independence Day celebration and the Columbus Farmers’ Market in the past.

Also on tap for the March 30 kickoff will be members of the Houston Classic Chevy Club, putting some of their best cars on display for the day.

Kids activities planned will include face painting by members of the Columbus High School Theater Department, a bean-bag toss game with prizes for certain age categories, and more.

For those worn out after eating some food, shopping the vendors, listening to music and watching the kids playing games, stop by and have a chat with the “Old Coots Giving Advice” at their booth. They warn that, while the advice is probably bad, it is free.

Anyone over 18 can enter for a chance to win $50 in Country Market merchandise certificates. This year, two winners will be selected each month. Visit the Information Tent for a chance to win.

For those who want something more than once monthly, a group of vendors are gathering on the Square on the remaining Saturday mornings. They’re calling it “Saturdays on the Square.” But you’ll always find the big event with live music, kid’s activities, food trucks and more, on the last Saturday of every month, said organizers.

The Columbus Country Market volunteer-organizers encourage the public to come out and support local farmers, gardeners, bakers and craftspeople.
