The Eagle Lake Police Department has arrested a Honduran national on charges of online solicitation of a minor, a third-degree felony, a department spokesperson said Thursday evening.

Olvin Menjivar, 30, Honduras, was arrested just after 4 p.m. yesterday at an Eagle Lake park where he showed up to meet a 14-year-old girl he had solicited for sex through the social media services Facebook and Snapchat, said ELPD Officer Neftali DeJesus, who led the investigation.

DeJesus said the case first came to ELPD’s attention on July 1, after the victim reported Facebook instant messages from the suspect to the department.

ELPD conducted a sting operation yesterday afternoon. DeJesus said Capt.  Wendy Alley of the Columbus Police Department and Investigator Webb with the Colorado County Attorney’s Office teamed to assist the department with the investigation.

When the suspect arrived at the park, he believed he was meeting the 14-year-old behind the bathrooms to pick her up for a sexual encounter. DeJesus said the department was able to confirm the suspect was the same man messaging the victim based on instructions the victim gave the suspect, which the suspect had followed.

ELPD Sgt. David Weatherall and Colorado County Sheriff’s Department officers were part of the arrest operation.

The suspect is currently detained in the Colorado County Detention Center on an immigration hold. He was in the country unlawfully.

DeJesus encouraged parents to remain viligant concerning their children’s social media activity.
