Junior high Lady Cards take on District T&F Meet

The Columbus Junior High Lady Cards track and field had another strong day as they competed in the District North Zone Meet and finished with top placements. Both teams finished in the top three overall as the seventh grade team finished in third place and the eighth grade team finished in second place. The Junior High Lady Cards finished their strong season off with an impressive end with both teams taking 19 combined medals. Teams that placed in the top four confirmed their spot in the District Advance Meet hosted by Industrial on April 6.

The seventh grade squad secured double digit medals after a host of impressive performances. Sloan Youens had one of the strongest days overall with two gold medals in the field events. She took first place in both the shot put and discus throws. The Lady Cards had a strong field day as they also got a gold medal in the long jump from Kaylea McCarthy followed directly by Lexi Kulhanek who finished in second place in the same event. Columbus had a strong day on the track as well. The relay team of Kulhanek, McCarthy, Youens and Demi Roecker combined to take the silver medal in the 4X200m relay race. Youens and Kulhanek raced again with Brisa Morales and Layla Torres to take the bronze medal in the 4X400m relay. The Lady Cards continued their success on the track as McCarthy claimed a gold medal in the 200m dash. Madison McRee took on the long distance runs and found a high level of success. She claimed second place in the 2400m run and third place in the 1600m run. Roecker added another medal with a bronze finish in the 100m sprint.

Columbus' eighth grade Lady Cards found a majority of their success on the track as they claimed several medals in those events. Faith Cleveland, Cayla Grounds, Peyton Drozd and Candee Pitchford teamed up to take the silver medal in both the 4X100m race and the 4X200m race. Drozd, Mary Fitzgerald, Sylvia Navarro and Isabella Shorter combined to take third place in the 4X400m relay. Pitchford had the best final placement individually with a gold medal in the 200m dash.  Cleveland claimed silver in the 100m sprint, while Shorter also took a silver medal in the 400m dash. Grounds and Edith Nieto took third place in the 200m and 2400m races respecitively. Drozd took the team's only medal in field events with second place in the high jump.
