Mayor Lori An Gobert made a major statement for women in the county on Tuesday, Aug. 15 as several women and girls gathered to witness Gobert sign a woman-centered proclamation into reality. During the event coordinated by the Colorado County unit of the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas, Gobert proclaimed that Aug. 26 would become Women’s Equality Day in Columbus.

The proclamation aligns with Congress as the upcoming day was also nationally designated for Women’s Equality.

The day celebrates the work of prior advocates for women’s suffrage and the major victory of the Nineteenth Amendment that allowed women the right to vote. It also recognizes the importance of women to democracy in America and highlights the need for the continued work to expand and secure the rights of women in the country.
