Former officer arrested

On Saturday, Dec. 11, 2022, at approximately 1:26 a.m., Columbus Police said they responded to the 2100 block of Walnut Street in regards to an Eagle Lake Police unit with its emergency lights on, stuck and bottomed out in a citizen’s yard.

On Saturday, Dec. 11, 2022, at approximately 1:26 a.m., Columbus Police said they responded to the 2100 block of Walnut Street in regards to an Eagle Lake Police unit with its emergency lights on, stuck and bottomed out in a citizen’s yard.

Columbus Police said a short time later, then off-duty Eagle Lake Police Department Officer Christopher Cannon, arrived in his personal vehicle to pull the patrol car out of the yard. As a result of that incident, the Columbus Police Department said they issued Cannon citations for Reckless Damage/Destruction and Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility, class C misdemeanors.

On Monday, April 17, 2023, the City of Columbus Municipal Court Clerk reported to Columbus Police Department that Cannon had presented a fraudulent insurance card to the court, according to a release. Columbus Police said an investigation was opened into the allegation.

On Tuesday, April 18, police said Cannon, in a jury trial held in the Columbus Municipal Court with Municipal Judge Leonard Peters presiding, was found guilty on both charges of Reckless Damage/Destruction and Fail to Maintain Financial Responsibility.

On Friday, April 28, after a thorough investigation, police said a Probable Cause Affidavit seeking an arrest warrant on Cannon for Tampering with Governmental Records, a Third Degree Felony was presented to Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, Judge Billy Hefner. Judge Hefner issued warrant #FE1-23-0015 for Cannon’s arrest, according to a release.

On Monday, May 22 at approximately 9:55 a.m., Columbus Police Department said it learned that Cannon was arrested by the Rosenberg Police Department on their agency’s outstanding warrant as well as a new charge of Impersonating a Public Servant, a Third Degree Felony. According to a release, Cannon was transported to the Fort Bend County Detention Center where he was booked in without incident.
