Nesbitt Memorial Library receives achievement of Excellence Award

COLUMBUS — Out of the 545 public libraries in the state of Texas, the Nesbitt Memorial Library has distinguished itself as part of the top 15% in terms of quality and excellence after being awarded the 2023 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award.

The Texas Municipal Library Directors Association recognized just 84 libraries including Nesbitt Memorial in the state to earn the award after a year of high marks with their service to the community.

“I am proud of the work we do and honored for the library to be recognized, not only locally, but also by the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association,” Librarian Susan Chandler said.

According to a release by the TMLD, libraries can only receive the award after exhibiting “excellence by providing services to underserved and special populations” along with a litany of other initiatives displayed by awarded libraries.

Part of the requirements to earn the award is to provide special and educational programming for residents regardless of age.

The TMLD cited Nesbitt’s many programs such as its two monthly book discussions, seasonal reading programs, technology courses and cybersecurity programs.

“It is a privilege and a testament to our community that we are able to provide a variety of programs and receive the community’s support — people attending and participating,” Chandler said.

Chandler also gave credit to her staff at the library who played a major role in helping the library reach this distinction with their efforts.

“I am very fortunate to have Jessica Commanda and Cody Graves on staff. They are always thinking of ways to improve customer services including innovative programming,” Chandler said.

The recognition came with several different items to mark the distinction. Nesbitt received a letter of congratulations, a digital medal, a few sample press releases and promotional tips as well as an award info sheet and template to order a plaque for the physical location.

Chandler thanked the community and city officials for their constant support of the library and their continued dedication to giving the community quality local services. She also explained how the award has a special meaning behind it as the library received it during its 75th year anniversary.

“Our Mayor (Lori An Gobert), City Council, City Manager (Donald Warschak), Library Board, Friends of the Library and Nesbitt Memorial Library Foundation provide a support system that is unmatched,” Chandler said, “We have so many wonderful community partners, as well, so the library can function in a healthy, living way.”
