Saints off to an active year at St. Anthony

COLUMBUS — The school year got off to a busy start for St. Anthony Catholic School’s Saints, including new opportunities for Junior High students during their elective period, educators said.

According to a release, the activities include “Messy Science,” “Chop it Like it’s Hot” (cooking), “Creative Stitches” (sewing), STREAM (science, technology, engineering and math paired with religion and arts), vocal music, “Ring Bell Ring” (hand bells) and floral design.

The educational opportunities “all offer students a fun way to learn a new skill or simply learn more about something they already love to do,” the release said.

Among other news at the school, teacher Pat Bartels got a pie to the face during a recent pep rally as part of a Parent Teacher Club fundraiser.

“The teacher with the most donations was chosen to take one for the team,” according to the release.

The PTC is also collecting donations and items for the Halloween Carnival raffle. To make a donation, contact the school office at 979-732-5505.

The PTC recently made a donation to the SAS football team in memory of Karl Hill, “who spent countless hours volunteering for many SAS sports and activities.”

The next PTC meeting is 6 p.m. Sept. 11. The school is at 635 Bonham St.

In sports news, the school’s six-man team has won both of its games so far, defeating Trinity and St. Joseph.

The Saints will take on the Victoria Cobras Sept. 12 in Victoria.

The Lady Saints A-volleyball team has a record of 1-2 while the B-team has a record of 2-1, coaches said.

The volleyball teams played Faith Academy on Sept. 5, but scores were not available at press time.

According to educators, there is no children’s celebration of Mass and no school on Sept. 8 due to the Colorado County Fair holiday.
