Slew of road closures confirmed

COLUMBUS — Several spring and summer events have officially been confirmed as the city moved to approve road closures for three separate events.

The city approved a reoccurring road closure as the Columbus Country Market returns on March 30 and is scheduled for the last Saturday of each month through November. Travis Street will be closed between Walnut Street and Spring Street from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for each occurrence. The scheduled dates are projected to be as follows: April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, Aug. 31, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 30.

The Saturday following the Country Market will require the same stretch of road to be closed for Habitat for Humanity’s Community Connections Day. The marked section of Travis Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Habitat looks to host an all-day event.

St. Anthony Catholic School also requested a road closure for their second annual career day event. The school requested that the city close Wallace Street between Live Oak Street and Bowie Street on Tuesday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The council also heard a presentation by a representative from the Texas A&M Transportation Study as doctoral student Jennifer S. Ramirez-Chavarria gave the council some extra information on the project and materials to fill out surveys related to the project surrounding the transportation needs of residents in Colorado County.

City administration reminded residents that they can call City Hall to sign up for utility billing by email. They also encouraged residents to call to request tree limb pickup from April 8 to April 12. The service is part of the Trash-Off event on Saturday, April 6. Residents can bring large items to the City Maintenance Yard from April 3 through April 6.

The administrative department also confirmed that the original traffic light at the intersection of Fannin Street and HWY 71 has been removed as the replacement is fully operational.

The council will meet again on Monday, April 8 for a regularly scheduled meeting.
