Geraldine Mildred “Geri” Avery, 96, of Columbus, died Jan. 17. She was born Dec. 20, 1923 in Columbus to John Sommerlatte and Frances Untermeyer Sommerlatte.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Mathilda Burger Untermeyer, her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Sommerlatte, her parents, her husband, Milburn G. Avery, and her brother, John L. Sommerlatte.

She is survived by her children: Marilynn (Anthony “Red”) Hensley of Ganado, Patricia Avery of Portland, Pamela (Buddy) Gates of Corpus Christi, Gary (Cindy) Avery of Peoria, AZ, and Cary Avery of Columbus. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service with rosary will be Friday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with Deacon Anthony “Red” Hensley officiating. Visitation will be one hour before from 1 – 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus, where Geraldine will be interred between her mother and her husband.

Serving as pallbearers are Larry Stolar, Clint Hensley, David Wharton, Bret Hensley, Ryan Wharton and Matthew Wharton. Honorary pallbearers are Buddy Gates and Cary Avery.
