1955-2022

Barney John Kasper left this world for brighter skies on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at his home in Sheridan, Texas. He was born June 24, 1955, to John and Aileen Kasper. Barney was the oldest of five siblings growing up in Weimar, Texas. He graduated from Weimar High School in 1974 and continued working at the family business, Kasper’s Meat Market. Shortly after, he met his wife of 44 years, Jimmi (McCauley) Kasper. They married August 26, 1978.

In 1980, Barney hired on at the Katy Railroad in Smithville, and he later went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad. Wanting to be present for his growing family, he returned to work at the family business in 1983. He spent the rest of his career at Kasper’s where he never met a stranger and always had a story to tell.

Barney was an avid outdoorsman, and he loved to hunt and campout as a kid and go on walks and rock hunts with his children. Another interest of Barney’s was aviation, which led to him earning his private pilot’s license. His love of history fanned his interest in antique shopping, reading, storytelling, and genealogy.

In his later years, he enjoyed sitting outside keeping an eye out for spotting wild animals. Ever an avid bird watcher, he could identify a bird by sight or sound. He also found a great deal of joy spending time with friends and playing dominos at local socials at the Elder Fest and Lutheran Church in Weimar.

One of Barney’s favorite roles in life was as “Pap Pap” to his beloved grandchildren. They have many special memories sitting on his lap reading, listening to his childhood stories, and playing games including Tic-Tac Toe and Go Fish.

Barney was predeceased by his father, John E. (Johnnie) Kasper and brother, Francis Kasper.

He is survived by his wife, Jimmi (McCauley) Kasper, of Sheridan, Texas; his son, Eric Kasper and wife Alia Aghajanian, of Washington, D.C.; his daughter, Lauren (Kasper) Alletag and husband Michael Alletag and their children Harper, Wyatt, and Nolan, of Frisco, Texas; his mother, Aileen (Ulrich) Kasper; siblings, Cynthia and husband Larry Seydler, Maurice and wife Connie Kasper, and Jean and husband Freddie Blaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas, on Friday, November 4, 2022, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Bob Knippenberg officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in Weimar Masonic Cemetery in Weimar, Texas.
