Ethel Hurr Ray, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2023. Ethel was born on Nov. 23, 1928, in Columbus, Texas to Johnnie Lee and Henry Hurr. After losing her father at a very young age, Ethel spent her childhood with her mother in Glidden, Texas surrounded by her beloved Aunt and Uncle, Ethel and Harvey Hope, as well as her cousin Betty Jo Hope Wittmer, who was like a sister to her.

Ethel graduated from Columbus High School and afterwards attended Baylor University where she majored in Education and Spanish, graduating at the top of her class in 1949. While at Baylor, Ethel was crowned “Baylor Beauty” and met Kelly Mc-Cann whom she married in December 1949. Kelly and Ethel settled in Dallas, Texas where she briefly taught school and they raised their three sons; Kelly, Jimmy and Bill.

In 1985 Ethel relocated to Summit County, Colorado and eventually met and married Dave Ray. Ethel and Dave enjoyed many happy and adventurous years together. They made their way back to Columbus, Texas where they both comfortably lived out their final days.

Ethel is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dave Ray. She is survived by her sons, Kelly Franklin Mc-Cann, Jr. (Gai l), James Ralph McCann (Nancy), William Lee McCann (Jennifer), stepdaughters Lorrie Ray (Charles Clark) and Amy Seymour (Paul), eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend our deepest appreciation to Ethel’s amazing caregivers; Sheila, Hazel, May, Janice and Martha who enriched her life and made her last days so comfortable and peaceful and to her wonderful Columbus neighbors who were so caring and attentive. We would also like to thank Dr. Bart Klaus for his exceptional and compassionate care.

Please join us for a celebration of Ethel’s life at her family home on Sunday, July 9 from 1-3 p.m.
