Gayle Alan Gertson of Eagle Lake passed away at his residence Dec. 19. He was born Sept. 13, 1955 in Eagle Lake to Ralph and JoAnn Gertson. He married the love of his life, Susan Phillips, on July 14, 1989, and they lived happily until his death.

Gayle was a dedicated and loving father, grandfather and son. When he wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed spending time with his family, deer hunting and scratching lottery tickets. He was an avid story teller and never met a stranger.

Gayle was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity while attending Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State) where he forged lifelong friendships. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

Upon completion of college, Gayle made his way back to Eagle Lake and started the Gertson family’s fourth generation of rice farming. During his many years of farming he also endeavored in GG’s Goose Hunting Club, truck transportation, gardening, deer lease operation and more recently, caring for and maintaining bees with honey production.

Gayle is survived by his wife, parents, his daughter Cori St. Pierre (husband Beau), son Matt Gertson (wife JoLynn), grandchildren Taylor and Caden Gertson and Charlotte and Clint St. Pierre. Gayle is also survived by brothers Ralph (wife Connie), Darrell (wife Gail) and Andy (wife Susan), sister Becky Moulder (husband Billy), father and mother-in-law Dan and Maudie Darr and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gayle is preceded in death by his son SPC. Clint Gertson, infant brother Jo Anthony, grandparents Pearl and Walter Meitzen, Jr., Valasta and Alfred Gertson, father-in-law Clyde Phillips and brothers-in-law Bobby and Paul Phillips.

Visitation was Dec. 26 with Rosary starting at 7 p.m. at the Parish of the Nativity in Eagle Lake. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Dec. 27. Burial is in Lakeside Cemetery, and a meal at Didner Hall followed the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Clint Gertson Memorial Scholarship Freedom Fund at the First National Bank in Eagle Lake.
